Old New Age

What is Old New Age (trends from past decades that are back in style today)

It has been said that there is nothing new under the sun. We have only to glance at trends in fashion, style and weddings to see that the old saying is true. Here is a sampling of boomerang trends that were so great the first time they’ve come around again.

Recycled style from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s

Think flirty short dresses, bohemian style, boyfriend blazers, statement jewelry such as chokers, skinny jeans, vintage beaded clutches and Doc Marten boots. If you’ve saved any of your past treasures or know where you can rescue some from a donation bin, you’re in luck because what’s old is new again. Don’t have any of these things? Head to the makeup counter for a tube of bold red lipstick – it’s in again, too.

Eco-friendly

Remember the days of tree huggers and granola fiends? Eco-friendly offers the same ideas with a more modern name. Eco-friendly values are showing up in everything from wedding receptions with sustainable food selections, locally grown, seasonal flowers and recycling to green household cleaning products and local, rather than destination, weddings that limit environmental impact.

Outdoor weddings

After many years of churches and banquet halls trends are moving back to nature. Think barns, farms, parks and beaches for weddings that celebrate in a way that is simple and superb.

Mismatched bridesmaid dresses

In a nod to the 70’s mismatched bridesmaids dresses are making a comeback. This is a very welcome trend for bridesmaids everywhere who have long hated ghastly gowns that flatter no one and are never worn again. Today’s trend lets bridesmaids choose gowns that actually look great and are worthy of a place in the closet.

Metallic shine

Popular in the 90’s and showing up now at parties, on invitations, clothing and décor, metallic shines again. Opt for electric blue or sparkling silver to give your look or your special event the star treatment. Tinted lenses are back in style, too. But don’t use so much shine that everyone around you needs to don them to see.

Old fashioned flowers have new appeal

Heirloom carnations, chrysanthemums, zinnias and long-stemmed English sweet peas are all enjoying resurgence in popularity. Flower crowns from the 60’s and 70’s are also making a comeback for weddings.
